At the beginning of 2010, the European Commission started to develop a strategy for the Danube region. This process is open to all stakeholders of the countries concerned - Danube countries from or outside of the European Union - including all actors of civil society, NGOs, academic institutions.
The European Commission has prioritized 3 pillars as core content for the Danube strategy:
- Environment including transnational water and resource management, Biodiversity, risk prevention and management
- Connectivity including improvement of bridges, rail- and waterways, information technology, as well as ensuring sustainable energy
- Socio-economic Integration including socio-economic integration, labour market, cultural heritage and diversity, demographic change and integration of migrants
There have been demands to establish additional pillars:
- Prosperity and Security for all Citizens
- Cooperation of Cities and Regions to Promote Innovation and Improve European Governance
- Civil Society Participation
