The work of the Campaign is characterized by two major areas:
- European wide promotion for political support for the Aalborg Commitments
- European wide implementation of the Aalborg Charter and Aalborg Commitments
The core strategic tool of the Campaign is built around a partnership between eight local government networks and the Campaign funders. The networks supply the means for reaching out to local governments across Europe and provide the know-how and the tools for the creation of sustainability policies, sustainability plans and the implementation of the Aalborg Commitments. To date, more than 2,500 European local governments from more than 40 European countries have signed the Aalborg Charter, the 1994 founding document of the Campaign.
