The Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign aims to help local governments across Europe to mainstream sustainability best practice and to implement the Aalborg Charter and Aalborg Commitments to achieve tangible results in local sustainable development.
The work of the Campaign is characterized by two major areas:
The core strategic tool of the Campaign is built around a partnership between eight local government networks and the Campaign funders. The networks supply the means for reaching out to local governments across Europe and provide the know-how and the tools for the creation of sustainability policies, sustainability plans and the implementation of the Aalborg Commitments.
To date, more than 2,500 European local governments from more than 40 European countries have signed the Aalborg Charter, the 1994 founding document of the Campaign.
